Cycling remains primarily a recreational pursuit in America and although a number of cycleway schemes are being implemented none of these is at the expense of car travel. A number of cities and towns are described where specific facilities and policies have been developed including Seattle, Eugene, Arlington County, Palo Alto, Dallas, San Diego, Madison, Davis and Boulder. The role played by the states of Florida, West Carolina and Oregon in setting standards and allocating funds is outlined. A number of categories of bikeways are identified and design specifications for shoulders, wide kerb lanes, cycle lanes and cycle paths described. Recommendations are made for developing bicycle programmes, integrating bikes with public transport, and the provision of bicycle parking, all based on US experience. A number of programmes are described which have been used to encourage commuters to cycle and the success of a scheme to put police on bikes is outlined.
