This article discusses the requirements and design of the roadside sensors required if the IRTE (Integrated Road Transport Environment) is to be achieved. It also describes the UROP (Universal Roadside Processor) project, which is part of the DRIVE programme, whose aim is to design and implement independent architecture that can be used as a reference model for the implementation of roadside sensors. The modular system structure of the sensors, which should enable it to carry out a multitude of traffic data collection and traffic control functions, is presented. Functions include traffic counting, incident detection, traffic signal control, driver information, weaving course texture and/or aquaplaning monitoring, pollution detection and road temperature measurement (black ice detection).
