Poor driving by tanker truck drivers is likely to cause damage higher than the accident average. In 1985 the Daimler- Benz AG began working on a project to equip tanker trucks with a variety of both active and passive safety devices (Tanklastwagen mit optimierter passiver und aktiver Sicherheit: TOPAS). Vehicle concepts employing different equipment are investigated in terms of driver behaviour.
