The Taipei's Department of Transportation has operated its first generation Traffic Control Center (TCC) for almost 10 years. During this period, more than 1000 intersection controllers and detectors were connected to the TCC as well as 22 Variable Message Signs (VMS). The computers and communication equipment have been in place for the same period of time and have not been updated. Due to the year 2000 (Y2K) problem and increasing maintenance efforts for out-dated equipment, a major overhaul was undertaken in the Taipei TCC. The major goal is not only to fix the Y2K problem and update the equipment, but also to upgrade the TCC to a Traffic Management and Information Center (TMIC). The additional processes involved are function enhancement, user interface update, remote access establishment and information broadcasting capability. The project is part of national ITS early deployment plan and is attracting much attention from the ITS community. The system is expected to be in service before 2000. (A*)
