Samenvatting

The purpose of the study was to collect data on pedestrian accident causal factors based on observation of pedestrians and pedestrian-vehicle interaction behaviors. Observation data were collected using a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system from 36 urban intersections in two U.S. cities. Data from 6,300 street-crossing observations were analyzed to attempt further specification of certain infrequently occurring accident patterns identified in previous research, and to identify new patterns or potential accident causal types (PACTs). Fourteen PACTS were initially hypothesized. Eight are considered sufficiently important to recommend their further investigation. The CCTV system is described and evaluated.
