Glasgow City Council, as part of the EU funded TABASCO project, are implementing integrated urban traffic control within Glasgow city centre. Implementation has involved ramp metering to manage access to the M8 motorway, VMS to advise of alternative urban routes, and a control algorithm residing within the existing National Driver Information Control System to accommodate diverting traffic through the manipulation of signal timings upon the urban streets. This is considered a significant achievement by overcoming historic separation in the management of strategic and local traffic within a road network consisting of both motorway and urban streets. Initial evaluation has indicated that increased motorway capacity can be achieved whilst minimising impact upon the urban network. The work undertaken will form part of an Integrated Transport Strategy for Glasgow.
