This document presents the current institutional organisation of urban public transportation in France. It updates and improves a previous 1990 edition. It deals with the main aspects on which the specific nature of the French system is based: the establishment of local organising authorities, the sharing of responsibility between the State, these authorities and the operating companies, the status of the operating companies, and the financing of the urban transport system. It illustrates them with case studies. (A)
