The purpose of this publication is to provide guidelines for the geometric design of major urban roads. They have been prepared to ensure a consistent approach to road design across Australia and New Zealand. During preparation of the publication a wide selection of local and international research materials were reviewed. The guide provides an up-to-date coverage of Australian and New Zealand road design practice. It is intended that the guide will be used by general practitioners working in road and traffic engineering and other related disciplines. Undergraduate and postgraduate students also can use it. This publication outlines a set of guidelines rather than a prescriptive set of standards. Therefore, designers should apply the recommended guidelines in conjunction with their own skill and judgement to the particular issue that they are considering. Every effort should be made to achieve them whenever this is economically and practically feasible. A decision to accept design criteria less than the minimum suggested in this guide should only be made after full analysis of the implications, including those affecting road safety.
