The present study concerns the Danish contribution to the initial stage of the EU-project DUMAS, Developing Urban Management and Safety, a project of the research programme of the Directorate General for Transport of the European Union. The objective of DUMAS is to produce a framework for the design and evaluation of urban safety initiatives, where safety initiatives imply the integration and co-ordination of traffic safety objectives and other objectives at a local level. The first stage, Workpackage 1 - Existing Experience, has been applied to preparing national state-of-the-art reviews on existing practices and experience in the field. Besides Denmark, eight other countries participate in the project: Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. This report presents the Danish contribution. This report includes five chapters: Chapter 1 outlines the organisation of the Danish road sector. Activities involving traffic safety work are also described briefly. Chapter 2 describes the main issues of the traffic and accident situation in Denmark. Chapter 3 describes the most important national objectives, strategies, and action plans concerning traffic safety, and environment. Chapter 4, the main chapter, describes the work process concerning development, implementation, and evaluation of traffic and environment action plans by a Danish road authority. The chapter includes experiences and research finding within the individual stages of the work process. Chapter 5 contains the closing remarks about the traffic safety work in Denmark. A reference list can be found at the end of the report. (A)
