Samenvatting

Low cost engineering measures have been successfully used to reduce accidents at 'black spots'. However a broader area wide approach is called for to deal with the remaining more scattered accidents. Such an approach has been developed in the transport and road research laboratory's urban safety project which is intended to provide a generally applicable system for reducing urban accidents. The report describes early results from trial schemes which are being carried out in five towns in England. These indicate that savings of about 10 per cent of total injury accidents can be expected from this area-wide approach.
