This publication contains papers of the international CODATU VIII conference. The main goal of the conference was to assist in the interface between transportation and urban planning policies in order to promote `sustainable' development. The papers are organized in three sections: (1) Different aspects of urban transport policy; (2) How to achieve an urban transportation policy; and (3) implementation of an urban transport policy. The French title of the publication is: "La politique de deplacements urbains: outil du developpement durable: actes du congres international CODATU VIII, Le Cap, Afrique du Sud, 21-25 september 1998".
