Samenvatting

This paper provides an overview of trends in urban travel demand, and examines the consequences of future travel trends for environmental degradation (congestion, CO2 emissions and other urban problems), and considers the extent to which behavioural responses, technological developments and the adoption of new policies might ameliorate the future problems. The paper uses the results from modelling studies to examine the likely impacts of possible transport measures such as car restraint, public transport improvement, traffic management etc., as well as land-use policies aimed at reducing the need to travel and encouraging modal transfer to energy efficient modes.
