Central detail visual acuity is needed for very brief periods of time in driving activity. Small telescopes mounted in the upper portions of correcting spectacles may be used in specific cases where drivers are unable to pass the motorist's vision examinations. Accident rates among users of these bioptic telescopic devices are not significantly higher than normally sighted drivers when normalized for age and sex.
