Samenvatting

Since 1995 several local authorities in the UK have made permanent a number of experimental Traffic Regulation Orders allowing motorcyclists to use bus lanes. There are a number of benefits and disbenefits to this practice. Issues that need to be considered if motorcyclists are to be allowed to use bus lanes are outlined, including safety assessments, visibility, pedestrians, pedal cycles, turning vehicles, bus gates, pedestrianised areas, narrow bus lanes and frequent bus stops. Policy over the use of bus lanes should be consistent where routes cross political boundaries.
