Samenvatting

Three case reports are described in which a cellular telephone was used in the treatment of fear of driving. Therapists accompanied patients for in vivo driving sessions once virtual reality exposure (computer simulation) therapy had been conducted. The therapist followed the patient in another vehicle, and the patient was allowed to contact the therapist using a cell phone during periods of increased anxiety. Although safety issues must be addressed, the ability of patients to contact the therapist with a cell phone was instrumental in overcoming the fear of driving. New technology, including possible wireless vital sign monitoring, is discussed. (A)
