Samenvatting

This paper examines the different types of surfacing materials which are currently being used in pedestrian zones in the United Kingdom, and assesses their effect upon disabled persons' mobility. The first measurements used a system called "VIB-RATE", which measures induced whole body vibration caused by surface materials. The relationship between pavement joint pattern and level of vibration of different types of wheelchair was recorded and analyzed. Measurement of the skid resistance of crutches on various types of surface finishes and adverse weather conditions were also measured and analyzed. A test rig was developed which enabled the authors to measure the load which caused a crutch to slip on a particular surface. An increased load was applied using an hydraulic ram until slip occurred. The resistance of concrete and clay pavers to polishing was also investigated.
