The determination of the maximum HIC number achieved by a test headform during impact is an unreliable and inconsistent measure of a helmet's ability to modulate the injurious affects of a rapidly applied load. Standard techniques for measuring peak force, force distribution, loading onset rates and energy dissipation told more promise for making such evaluations and for the production of more effective helmets.
