Samenvatting

One of the functions of road shoulders is to provide a stand- clear area for stationary vehicles. The aim of this study was to determine whether continuous wide shoulders were required for this purpose on all rural roads. A survey was conducted in Queensland investigating how frequently vehicles stopped on the road reserve, their location., reasons for their stopping, and the effect of road volume and number of rest areas on the rate of stopping. The results showed that a broken down vehicle was met on the carriageway, on average every 180 km travelled.
