Use of simulation in a study investigating alertness during long-distance, low-event driving.

The authors report their use of a simulator to study driver alertness. They attempted to identify vehicle driver-road environment interactions which tend to reduce driver alertness, thereby measuring these decrements in alertness, and delineate a research program to develop countermeasures.
