The Scottish Council for Research in Education (SCRE), assisted by the University of Wales at Aberystwyth, conducted a nine-month evaluation study of the use of theatre tours in road safety education in secondary schools between July 1994 and March 1995. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness for pupils in upper secondary classes of a road safety message delivered by: a theatre group; Road Safety Officers (RSOs) - in this case uniformed police constables; or teachers. The relative effectiveness of the three modes of delivery was evaluated in terms of three criteria: imparting factual information, raising pupils’ awareness of road safety issues, and changing their attitudes to drinking and driving. Evidence was collected through the use of both qualitative and quantitative techniques. (Author/publisher)
