Samenvatting

The use of lower-grade and waste materials as alternatives to naturally ocurring aggregates in the construction of roads helps to conserve the supplies of good-quality aggregates and assists in problems arising from the disposal of unwanted materials. A considerable amount of work has been done on the utilisation of waste materials in road construction but the information so obtained is scattered among a large number of publications. The main purpose of this report is to bring this information together so that an assessment can readily be made of the suitability of any particular waste material for roadmaking. The report therefore considers the extent to which the road construction industry can use low-grade and waste material. It discusses the types and quantities of each material that are available, the purpose to which each material can be put in the various stages of road construction and the tests needed to ensure that the materials meet the required specifications.
