Samenvatting

The three most populated Australian States now use expert system based speed zone Advisors to assist practioners in setting appropriate, consistent speed limits. This paper discusses the development and structure of these Advisors. The paper outlines how the speed zoning rules and guidelines for each State can be applied to a wide variety of data relating to the characteristics of both the road and of the surrounding environment. The Advisors recommend the most appropriate speed limit for that location. The use of expert system technology is: (1) assisting practioners to implement State wide systems of rationally applied, consistent speed limits; and (2) is encouraging drivers to comply with these limits. The next stage is to develop a single Australia wide system.
