Samenvatting

This study examines the characteristics of alcohol-related accidents in wet versus dry counties in the state of Kentucky. It incorporates the location of the drivers residences through the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis. Accident rates were similar for counties with or without alcohol prohibition regulations. When several variables such as age, day of week and time of day dry and wet counties also showed similar trends. Drivers from dry counties have alcohol-related accidents significantly farther from their homes than residents from wet counties. These and other results suggest that dry county residents driving to wet counties to drink alcohol is a causal factor in some alcohol involved traffic accidents.
