Samenvatting

A method was developed in order to use GIS to investigate the association between the driver characteristics and traffic accident involvement. The analysis is performed for the purpose of identifying the areas in the state that have high accident rates. Two conventional characteristics - age and gender - were investigated together with income level. Several variables from the 1995 Florida crash database were used in the analysis. Using GIS each crash record was located by the driver's zip code making it possible to track the drivers involved back to their residence. Maps of the major metropolitan areas in Florida showing zipcode areas with high accident rates for different crash types in conjunction with the drivers' characteristics mentioned above were provided. The paper presents some of the relationships.
