Samenvatting

During the past five years, interest in asset management has grown within individual state departments of transportation (DOTs), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). The AASHTO and FHWA have joined together to develop an understanding of asset management and define the potential. This paper reviews the evolution of asset management in the United States that includes some of the major asset management activities in state DOTs. A peer exchange workshop involving thirty-three states was held in December 1999. The objectives of the workshop were to develop a better understanding of asset management tools and identify opportunities for improvement. Outcomes from the workshop are presented. (a)
