Information on traffic flows is fundamental to any rational approach to the planning of improvements to road networks and is of particular importance in developing countries where the most economical use must be made of the available resources. In order to be able to estimate traffic flows with an acceptable degree of accuracy, manual counting needs to be supplemented by automatic methods. The SYX-RRL type vehicle counter is well suited for use in developing countries since it is cheap, robust and simple to operate. As the Report gives a general description of operating and maintenance procedures it should also be of interest to users of SYX-RRL counters in the United Kingdom.
