European society and European citizens face very strong challenges in meeting their mobility needs, and the consequences of the choices made. The Citizens' Network marks part of the European Commission's response to the challenge. Intermodal transport is a vital element of the response, allowing citizens to make `seamless' journeys on a combination of modes which meet their individual need. Users currently face barriers due to lack of harmonisation of planning, pricing, systems and information. The Telematics for Transport program develops and validates suitable tools to support intermodal travel. A harmonised intelligent platform will allow the traveller support and operational management systems to function across modes. Through the demonstration phase, many of the non-technical barriers are also addressed. This does not underestimate the business, regulatory and management issues which remain. This paper reviews the challenges, and describes the work in the current program.
