SAFESPOT is an Integrated research Project (IP), co-funded by the European Commission Information Society Technologies. The project objective is tounderstand how intelligent vehicles and intelligent roads can cooperate to improve road transport safety. This paper covers some aspects of the vehicle-based SAFESPOT cooperative applications, focusing specifically on theachievements and work in progress from the OEMs (CRF, VOLVO, PIAGGIO, RENAULT) point of view. Some of the limits found in standalone ADAS applications are also reported and comparisons made with respect to the vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communications approach.
