Samenvatting

Introductory considerations on microelectronics. A survey is given of the historical development of construction principles in electronics. Under the influence of the evolution of electronic components and growing need for economic assembly methods for complex circuitry the well-known chassis construction, which was established technique during many years, evolved to the printed circuit technique. Further development of the underlying principles led to integrated circuits of the tin film type. Developments along these lines was strongly supported by the advent and evolution of semi- conductor devised, but in addition semiconductor technology offered a new way of developing integrated circuits by forming complete electronic circuits in semiconductor technology offered a new way of developing integrated circuits by forming complete electronic circuits in semiconductor crystals, thus giving birth to the modern monolithic technique. The principal advantages and limitations of the various techniques of micro-electronics are discussed and a general introduction to the subsequent lectures is presented.
