The definition of the validity of the Zelf-Beoordelings-Vragenlijst, a Dutch translation of the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, is described. On the average patients with an anxiety diagnosis have higher state and trait-anxiety scores than outpatients not diagnosed as such. Students in an 'anxiety provoking' situation (an examination) score higher on state-anxiety, but not on trait-anxiety as compared with their scoring behaviour in a 'rest' condition (a lecture). The correlations of the ZBV scores with other measures give support to the notion that the Dutch translation is a reliable and valid questionnaire for the measurement of state and trait-anxiety.
