`Van woonerf tot erf' [: in engelse, franse en duitse taal].

The word "woonerf" is made from the Dutch words for living and backyard. The word "erf" refers to the general idea of backyard. The Netherlands were one of the first countries in the world to become acquainted with the phenomenon of "woonerf". Especially for municipalities this was a remedy for the problems caused by the increasing traffic burden in residential areas. In 1976, the woonerf received its legal status. A number of amendments to relevant legislation have been made recently as a result of changing opinions and ongoing development in reshaping of roads and streets. A wider interpretation was given to the concept of "woonerf". Untill mid - 1988 in the Dutch context, the regulations were applicable to the regulations were applicable to residential areas.
