Samenvatting

The state of Maryland has installed nearly 70 variable message signs on highways in an effort to reduce congestion and improve safety. These signs display messages relating to accidents, congestion, construction, weather and other factors that interfere with traffic flow. This paper reports on a survey conducted in early December that examined drivers' opinions about these messages displayed on the signs. Specifically, the survey asked drivers whether these messages were useful and what other types of messages would be helpful.
