Samenvatting

Travel data for a sample of over 3000 households in the reading area in 1971 were used to compare the effect of residential location relative to the town centre on weekday travel time budgets and trip rates for both households and individual persons. The household values were found to be linearly dependent on household size with some dependence on household car ownership. The person values depended on employment status with employed persons travelling the most and retired persons the least. Overall, the average travel time was 58 minutes per person per day, with a trip rate of 2.8 trips per person per day. When both households and persons were grouped according to type, residential location was found to have little effect on either measure of travel. The spatial uniformity of the results was largely due to the similarity in trip times throughout the the survey area, averaging 20 minutes per trip. Separate modal values were 15 minutes for walk trips, 15 minutes for pedal cycle trips, 20 minutes for car driver and passenger trips, and 25 to 29 minutes for bus passenger trips. Comparison with the results from other studies of travel indicated that trip times by mode were no less invariant than either total daily travel time or trip numbers with respect to residential location within Reading, Great Britain and Holland, and over time.
