In this study, the variation of value of travel time savings (VTTS) over travel time of urban commuters is examined both theoretically and empirically by incorporating choice of residential location and a non-linear utility function. The formulation of a mathematical model for an individual's time allocation allowing for residential location choice is described. VTTSis derived from the model and analysed under market equilibrium. This is followed by an empirical analysis of the variation of VTTS over travel time. This is followed by an empirical analysis using the revealed preferencedata of urban rail users in Tokyo.
