The demands for chip spreading process on old and new road surfaces have continually increased over the past few years. For new layers, a great contribution towards this has been in particular the increasing of stone mastix asphalt (SMA). Similar to other applications, the distribution of chips is necessary for achieving initial skid resistance. At the same time the surface texture produced by the spreading process has a lasting influence on the drive noise emission.. Optimisation of spreading technology can reduce the quantity of unbounded chips. Also the safety aspect is important. Exactly spreaded chips can reduce the number of accidents and damaged cars from loose chips even if there is one lane under traffic, while the other lane is being reconstructed using the chip spreading process. Contractors and authorities have not been very satisfied with the achieved surface qualities in general. But no better equipment is available, therefore the achieved results must be accepted as they are. (A)
