To materialize AHS (automated highway system) user services, it is necessary that the system understands each vehicle's behavior on the road. Under contracted research with the Public Works Research Institute of Ministry of Construction, AHSRA (Advanced Cruise-assist Highway System Research Association) has been studying vehicle detection technology since its foundation. In 1998, as a part of its research activity, AHSRA manufactured experimental equipment that detects cruising vehicles utilizing infrared image. This equipment detects and tracks vehicles on the road and measures positions and speeds of them by means of processing 8-12.m band infrared image. This paper gives an outline of the equipment and results of the experiment. (A*)
