Samenvatting

Due to the increasing number of vehicles in Bhutan, vehicle emission has become a major cause of air pollution in Thimphu City. Although Bhutanese government has implemented many strategies to control vehicle emission, the existing strategies seem to be inadequate and there is still a need to explore alternative strategies for alleviating the problem. Though the vehicle emission control strategies can be easily proposed, it is in fact difficult to successfully implement as they depends mainly on public acceptance and support. In this study, the questionnaire survey of public opinion on vehicle emission control strategies has been carried out in the city of Thimphu. Data from the survey have also been used to analyze the individual preference to vehicle emission control strategies and whether it can be statistically linked to socio-economic characteristics of survey respondents. The results from this study could be helpful to the policy makers in evaluating long-term plan to reduce vehicle emission in Thimphu City.
