Headlights that are incorrectly adjusted or that emit an unsuitable beam pattern can create a major safety hazard for both vehicle drivers and other road users. The road traffic regulations in south africa prescribe that all motor vehicles be fitted with headlights that can emit a dipped and a main beam and that they be adjusted in a certain way. A number of surveys were undertaken from which it is concluded that headlighting is of a low standard in the republic of south africa owning to shortcomings in these regulations which allow the use of a mixture of different headlight beams and misaligned headlights. Recommendations are made to solve these problems, one of which is that further work on the accurate adjustment of headlights should be undertaken. (Author/publisher)
