Samenvatting

This brochure describes the limitations imposed in the various states and Australian government territories on the maximum mass and dimensions of registered road vehicles. The reasons for the restrictions are explained so that greater understanding for their necessity is achieved. The co-operation of all road users in complying with the regulations is sought. Restrictions on the mass of vehicles, axle loads, tyre pressure and overall dimensions are applied to keep the cost of constructing and maintaining roads within reasonable bounds. Permits are issued for exceptionally large or heavy loads for particular trips. Under the present statutory limits, roads can be expected to provide a reasonable level of service for their design life. Economics in road design and transportation are considered. Appendices give tables of mass and tyre pressure limitations, dimensional limitations, maximum gross mass and the limitations endorsed by the Australian transport advisory council.
