Summary of key points from analysis of 1992 speed survey: • 56 per cent of cars exceeded 70mph on motorways • 19 per cent of cars and motorcycles exceeded 80mph on motorways • 40 per cent of articulated HGVs exceeded their 60mph limit on motorways, although three quarters of these travelled under 65mpb • three quarters of 5 or more axled HGVs exceeded their 50mph limit on dual carriageways, 74 per cent of these exceeded the limit by less than 10mph • approximately 60 per cent of all HGVs exceeded their 40mpb limit on single carriageways, but nearly a half exceeded their limit by a maximum of 10mph • 9 per cent of motorcycles travelled between 60mph and 70mph on dual carriageways compared with 25 per cent on motorways despite the same speed limit summary of broad changes in vehicle speeds since 1983: • average car speeds on motorways appear to have increased in the early 1990s compared to the latter: half of the 1980s • average speeds and the proportion speeding, for cars and articulated HGVs fell slightly on single carriageway 'A' roads in 1992 from recorded peak 1991 levels.
