The author of this paper describes the current practices in vehicular headlight systems thereby pointing to major political and technical factors that tend to inhibit change. Improved headlighting technology is available, but application must always wait evaluation of potentially harmful trade-offs such opposing glare, complexity, cost and maintainability. Comments on the author's work is given by Philip Maurer. This discussion as well as the author's closure is included in the paper. (See also B 579).
