The integrated "Safety on the bicycle" campaign was designed on the initiative of the Traffic Police Department (Dienst Verkeerspolitie) of the Amsterdam police. This paper describes its starting points: (1) The campaign is directed at the behaviour of both car drivers and cyclists; and (2) it uses various methods for influencing behaviour. These include: (a) publicity; (b) selective police enforcement; (c) the application of alternative punishment; and (d) infrastructural measures, for instance the bicycle-friendly adjustment of traffic control by traffic signals. The paper can be used to: (I) evaluate the progress and contents of the campaign; and (II) pass on the experiences gained in the Amsterdam campaign to be used for possibly "new" and adjusted applications of this campaign.
