Samenvatting

Oxboard safety study : conformity to safety principles and a trial study. The Oxboard is a uniaxial, self-balancing electric powered vehicle. Presently the Oxboard is not allowed on public roads, because it does not fit into any of the legally established vehicle categories. The law has the possibility to allow innovative vehicles access to Dutch public roads by giving them the status of ‘special moped’. To get this status, the vehicle must meet a number of requirements that closely resemble the requirements for the light moped. For example, this is the way in which the Segway was designated as special moped and allowed on public roads. A manufacturer can make a request to the Ministry to start an admission procedure; the request must be accompanied by the results of a safety investigation. Oxboard BV asked SWOV to carry out such a safety investigation. This report describes the study and presents the results. The study consisted of two parts: 1. a check whether the vehicle conforms to principles of a sustainably safe road traffic, and 2. a practical test, in which driving on a Oxboard is compared with driving on a Paukool, a similar product that is already allowed on public roads.
