The effect of traffic plans for the city of Nijmegen hasbeen studied by means of simulation. The proposed traffic measures restrict the capacity of certain roads. The effectson the route shift, congestion and fuel consumption have been investigated. The simulations have been done with the computer program CONTRAM. Although the traffic measures caused only a small increase in distance travelled and net driving time, the total time travelled increased considerably, just as the fuel consumption, due to the increased congestion on the main roads.
