Samenvatting

During recent years an increasing interest has developed in traffic safety on a local and regional level and in particular in local and regional traffic safety policy. The royal dutch touring club ANWB would like to stimulate this and is considering the introduction of a traffic safety award for cities and possibly also for provinces. The institute for road safety research SWOV was asked to study whether and in what way the existing accident data could be used for this project. The study has been carried out using data from a sample taken in the dutch municipalities. A method was developed by which on the basis of recorded accident data municipalities could be selected with the most favourable score as regards traffic safety. In the result it should however be taken into account that (1) the stated differences are preponderantly not significant (2) it could not be determined whether the differences were caused by differences in level of registration and (3) the nature and function of the municipality was not taken into account sufficiently. Therefore the development of an applied method is recommended.
