Death-rates per 108 kilometres travelled are calculated for the Netherlands during the years 1978, 1979 and 1980. Official road-accident death data is related to data from the National Travel Survey. The data excludes children younger than 12 years old. The possible margins of error in the National Travel Survey and their effects on the calculated death-rates are discussed. The death-rates of road-user were approx: 26 for motorcyclist, 10 formopedists, 7 for pedestrians, 4 for cyclists, and 1 for car occupants (1.3 for drivers and 1.1 for passengers). Extra high death-rates were found among young motorcyclists and mopedists, and especially among mopedists, cyclists, and pedestrians of retirement age (65 years and older). Men had considerably higher death rates than women, winter months higher than other months, and the early hours of the morning had much higher rates than other hours.
