Samenvatting

The Transport Research Centre (AVV) of the Dutch Ministry of Transport commissioned the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research to jointly carry out preliminary activities with the Consumer Safety Institute (SCV). The goal of these activities was the registration of traffic accidents starting January 1994 as an extension of the current Home and Leisure Accidents Surveillance system (PORS). In PORS, data of Domestic and Sport Accidents are daily coded in 14 different participating hospitals in the Netherlands. The software used for coding was adapted to handle traffic accidents. The PORS coders have been trained for this purpose by SWOV. Other adaptions to the PORS system were jointly carried out by SCV and SWOV. The new system is called VIPORS. It was tested successfully in one of the participating hospitals. Finally, plans for the year 1994 are presented, covering the implementation of the system, the quality control of the data, and the use of the data. (A)
