In several German cities, accident analyses have been carried out which are intended to help evaluate the effects of area- wide traffic restriction measures on road safety. The method of investigation uses a before- and- after comparison with a control area. In the model areas, accident frequency in the "after" period sank by an average of 12% compared to the "before" period. It was also possible to clearly reduce accident consequences. Altogether, the number of two- wheelers and pedestrians involved in accidents was reduced by 36% and 40% respectively.
