This study aims to map the different areas in the passenger transport sector which make a more efficient use of energy scources possible. The following phases were completed: (1) Job demarcation; (2) Assessment of possibilities for energy conservation. All possibilities were classified under the following four clusters: (i) vehicle technology; (ii) traffic and transport systems; (iii) alternative fuels; and (iv) change in both purchase and in driving behaviour; (3) Evaluation of the possibilities for energy conservation. The evaluation was based, among other things, on: savings potential, feasibility of the measure and possibilities for the Dutch industry involvement; and (4) Assessment of possible impacts of combined measures. The following conclusions are made: (a) The four clusters show interesting possibilities for energy conservation; (b) The feasibility of the different measures is determined to a great extent by the combined application of favourable measures, pricing, and legal measures; (c) The Dutch industry can be involved in many ways; (e) Side effects can influence the suitability of a specific measure in a considerable way; and (f) combined measures may enlarge the probability of the realisation of an energy conservation option.
