Mode choice and travel information : the mental map as an instrument in analyzing mode choice behaviour. In the present paper, the idea of the mental map in relation with the mode choice process and travel information is explored. Literature review shows the results in using travel information in realizing a shift in modal split are rather disappointing. By using the concept of the mental map we may be able to get more grip on the role of travel information in the mode choice process. By exploring this concept for transportation purposes we show there may be a strong relation between the images people have of certain transport types and the choice of mode. Travel information seems an important element in the formation of the mental map. By making the mental map operational it can serve as an important tool in using travel information in a more effective way concerning the establishing of a shift in modal split. (Author/publisher)
